The Thing About Lighthouses

I had a few moments to spend with my new lighthouse. I cleaned it up, but not too much. I want it to have a weathered feel. It's bound to get grungy, what with all that sea air and such.  I removed the rope fencing thing on top and spraypainted the blue parts white.

I'm going to make the topmost level the lens and little glass building, then build out the second layer so a doll can stand on it. Add taller rope or wire fencing. The bottom level is totally tiny. I don't even know how I can manage a couch in that space. Gotta be really creative. I'm thinking a sad looking WWII bedroll and some rations or something.

The Hubs suggested having an attached cottage. I like this idea. I also thought I would wire the lighthouse so the light would actually be a light. I might even buy a lighthouse looking lantern and stick it up there. But for now, I'm going to build something on the cheap and throw an LED light in there or something.

But the thing about lighthouses is, well...Okay actual lighthouses are beautiful and romantic and such. But things built to look like lighthouses are, in most cases, really dorky. So I'm starting to realize how careful I have to be with this thing.

Still I have adorable 10 cent windows that I can't wait to use! Allow me to digress. What happened to the symbol for cents? We never use that anymore.

You know, I think dollhouses are my favorite party of the hobby.  Here's the lighthouse mock up I did in Photoshop. Be kind.

The Hubs says it looks cool, but I can't get over the feeling that it's incredibly dorky. Perhaps in context it will be okay...

So the base level will be the living/sleeping quarters until I make a wee cottage. I'll remove the next shelf level so my Lonely Lighthouse Keeper (TM) will be able to stand in his own home. Above that? I dunno, maybe a mini kitchen? It will be purely decorative, so I sky's the limit. Maybe a room of curios?

Above that is the tool room or whatever they have in lighthouses. Gears or something? I guess that would be for a clock tower...My research has been mainly superficial so far.

Anyway, I welcome any ideas!

    If it'd be any help I have a book about lighthouses and their technology. It's in German, but I could always send you pics and translate what you need. I might even have some blueprints, but I'd have to take a look. Most bookmarks I have about lighthouses are also in German, but I guess you can find a lot on the web.

The Return of Vita Plastica

Hi guys, good to be back! Let's get to it, I have a lot to cover. Basement Studio Like I said, I've moved my workshop into the basement. Soon I'll move all my crafty stuff down there and have upstairs purely as a showroom. So here's my workshop so far. Sigh. A work in progress. Dry Brushing I heart dry brushing. It's easy, it dries fast and even when you do a major screw up, it looks awesome. I strongly recommend it for those heavy of hand and prone to mistakes like me. I had one of these Barbie vanities. Was it a My Scene? The one that came with the leopard skin seat. It was originally peach I believe.  I painted it brown and it was serviceable but the model paint began to chip over the years, so I dry brushed it. Behold: It came out so well, I couldn't stop there. My next victim was the dining set I got in trade with Cat from Doll Affinity . I think this will go into Josephine's blue room.
