You Can't be a Photographic Genius Overnight?

Yeah, this weekend was supposed to be about learning photography, setting up lights and things working perfectly. Turns out photography isn't that easy.

I took my picture for the Figurevore Halloween challenge and I'm pretty happy with it. It purely came about by chance. And eliminating like 60 other shots I took.

But then I tried to put together my Halloween party and photograph it. I have a lot to learn. First of all, lighting 16 characters crowded into a room? A room that is actually a shelf, not a nice open set? Not fun.

So then I tried some test shots of some girls and none of them came out right. I think I'm going to need diffusers. Ah, another hobby that requires all kinds of money and STUFF. Ah well, I'll try to make a couple.

My husband suggests that I actually read the manual for my camera. Hmmph. I'm like a dude asking for directions when it comes to instructions. But I guess I must since pressing a flower button caused me to be totally unable to get the easiest shot!

And then I had a thought. Tell me if you agree: I was reading the FDQ book, which is nice if a little snobby, and they give photography advice for those who are doing fashion photography for dolls. That's great, who doesn't love a pretty doll in a pretty dress, but I do photostories. Where they are looking for one good shot, I'm looking for, I dunno, 32. They have one or two girls on which to focus and I have 16 at one party.

So I think I'm allowed to a little leeway. A hair does get out of place in real life!

Off to the forum where people do photostories to see what advice they might have!

Actually the delay in my Halloween party pics turned out to be for the best. Sooki's getting a new BFF in the mail, so I'll wait until she arrives to take the set of pics.

smooches,
dani

  1. I know this post is from a while ago but I thought I would say this anyway.. flash diffusers. I am by no means a photographic genius, but I use an empty clean yogurt cup and it works just fine. Maybe you could try that unless you've already got a proper diffuser! :D

  2. Thanks Alrunia. Do you just hold it in place or attach it to the camera? Time to go eat some yogurt! :)

Introducing Ayumi

I haven't been feeling particularly inspired with stories in Grandville, but their plastic lives are being led, with or without my story telling. And I have to practice my photography so instead I'm going to do a Cliff Notes if you will, of what has been going on in Grandville and who all these new characters are. First up, Ayumi. I might give her a new name at some point. I hate keeping the Integrity name but sometimes it just happens. She is a Korean supermodel who uses her funds to support her research as an astrophysicist. She got her Ph.D. at 18. This is Ayumi's house. Well, one of them. This is Ayumi's boyfriend of 10 months, Raj Nirvana. He's a yoga instructor. They have a harmonious relationship. Still, she wonders about that girl Marie. They seem to do a lot of talking after his yoga class. Ayumi loves hanging out with her girls. Nothing quite as fun as a day of shopping. Claire sighs, "How weird to have a bank account. ...

Grandville Summer Festival!

Hello doll friends, First up, I gotta show you this. My 4 year old was playing with my Barbie cast-offs and set up this little scene. (That yellow thing on the table is a TV shaped eraser.) Dig the lamp she made with a wedding cake and the pole from maybe a Barbie dress form? Adorbs. Anyway, this weather (raining pretty much daily for the last month or so) has wrecked my spray painting plans. Much of the royal storyline rests on this painting project. So for now I decided to continue the other stories I have going. Enjoy: "Ho-ly crap, what on earth are you wearing?" "Aw, Sook, I feel bad enough."   "Seriously. You are wearing khakis. You look cray cray. You're like somebody's mom right now. Please explain this situation." "My boss said my outfit was too sexy so I had to borrow something from Le Skater Dork over there at the cafe. Jeez, now I owe her one. Oh crap Channel 1 News is here."   "Thanks John. Lavita...

New Goodies!

But first, some news: Projects: Still working on the studio space for Remi and Bailey. The Hubs came in and voiced what was in my head, "So where is that kid supposed to sleep? That's messed up. There's no room for him?"  The last thing I wanted in Grandville is a kid's room. I don't want this rated R world changing into something wholesome. Buuut, if there is to be a custody battle for Julian, I have to make the case, right? So on top of the studio space, I'll build a little room for the brat to use. Maybe I'll give it a fun theme or something. Space or sci-fi or something that doesn't involve sports. I'm also working on a space backdrop for Nymeria and her sister. Then I can finally introduce you. I decided to go with a sort of cheesy 60's sci fi movie thing. That's what inspired the Alurium Vaccarra anyway. So, a sort of intentionally cartoony backdrop. The last project for now is my high school. I wanted it to be a three-...
