Okay I gave in. I had been reading around the blogs and forums and friggin' EVERYBODY has the Pop Life Barbies. Then I read Barbie Collector had them on sale! So I pounced. Only $24! I bought the blonde and the African American.
I have never been interested in the red head, though I like red head dolls. I just kept thinking, "What on earth is that hair going to look like when I comb it out?" And her face mold is just the Steffie mold, right? Not too mod looking. And horrible jumpsuit.
I've got to say, I loooove these bodies! What is Mattel thinking in not using them everywhere? They are firm, hold a pose well but feel sturdier than a Fashionista body. But they feel lighter than a Fashion Royalty or even a Dynamite Girl. And I have chairs for my new kitchen in progress. Hurrah.
The African American is named Domninique Harrington, is the mother of African American Barbie Basics Ken, named Judah. She is the best friend of Josephine Baker, an editor at a fashion magazine and will figure prominently in a story to come.
Not sure about the blonde. Her eyelashes are out of control and need a good trim. I'm thinking of a position for her but in involves a secret, so I'll tell you in a day or so.
The best part about the Pop Life dolls is you can pose them any way you want and it looks intentional (look, I'm not long apologizing for crap photos anymore. I have no time, people!):
Downside is the blonde looks especially dumb. Though she does remind me of Dusty Springfield. That might come in handy...
But anyway my friends, I have a secret! The Hubs got me a very special Valentine's gift and it's on its way. Hope to report more on that later...
But another thing. I read about this doll photographer Aneky on Doll Republik. I'm not a fan of doll photography. I think a good picture means I'm not thinking about about the quality of the photo (as one always thinks when it's a bad photo). In the world of dolls, photography is not the skill I'm trying to cultivate. I just want to learn the basics and turn out something that's not blurry.
But DUDE, Aneky is crazy good! I recommend you visit her Flickr as well. The photos in the story are just the tip of the iceberg. She's got sex, humor, photo stories without words. Her use of color and light. Oh my god, she's making me a fan of doll photography! Okay I think she needs to Photoshop the fishing line or whatever, but who am I to judge?
Speaking of photography, I bought a clamp light at Ikea the other day so I hope my photos will show some improvement. Oh and I found the thing that connects my camera to my tripod. My special surprise doll deserves flattering pictures. (PS: It's not such a surprise. If you read this blog, you know what I'm lusting after)

Oh, I love Aneky's photos! She is awesome! You are too funny..."especially dumb looking" that cracks me up. I want the AA one for her body, ha ha. I think Jazz Diva & Pop Life Christie are the same complexion and I was thinking of using the Pop life Christie as a back up/replacement for my TJ. Anyways, congrats on your purchase. Oh, also...Vans Dolls Treasures told me about clamp lights for $6 at Home Depot, so you can get 'em there too.
